One of Victoria’s most popular summer playgrounds has always been Shawnigan Lake, where families return to the same summer homes, year after year, for vacations…and where many families now live the year around. The group of Shawnigan Lake vacationists pictured on this page are enjoying summer’s golden day at this favored vacation spot.

Everyone loves to gather at the home of Mr and Mrs George Wheaton. They all head for the wharf and either with plunge in the warm water or bask in the sun. In the group, with their children, are Mrs Waldo Skillings, Mrs. Gordon Verley, Mrs WC Mearns, Mrs. Wheaton and Mrs FAE Manning. Children from other neighboring homes also joined in the fun.

Newcomers to Shawnigan are Mrs James Wood, Wendy, age eight, Brenda, seen, and Penny, six, spending the summer in their new summer home. On the week ends they are joined by Mr Wood. The family pet, Ponty, enjoys camp life too.

Beyond Cliffside on Shawnigan Lake cut-off there is a stretch which the local people call the “gold coast” where new homes, modernistically designed, rival homes in a city centre. Among those in the home of Mr and Mrs WC Mearns and their family Mrs Mearns with 11 month old Lindsay, on her knee is pictured with guests, Mr and Mrs Logan Mayhew. On the arm of the chesterfield is four year-old Marilyn Mearns.

A favorite spot for a holiday with many Victorians is the Shawnigan Beach Hotel. Guests from the city at the hotel during the past week were, left toright: Frances Wainwright, Ricky Wainwright, Mrs FG Bishop, Mr Bishop, Mrs Eric F Wainwright and Derek Bishop.

During the summer, peaceful waters are churned and tossed as flashing speed boats skim the surface. Proud owners of one of these boats are Mr and Mrs WJ Hamilton and daughter Heather. The Hamilton family have a summer home on the “gold coast”
